How to Remove “Powered by Shopify” With Ease

We’re not afraid to say it – Shopify are pioneers in the ecommerce space, paving the way for many beginners and aspiring entrepreneurs, and further pushing experienced merchants. The platform is incredibly powerful, user friendly and easy to navigate.

But, some merchants do seem to have a slight problem - the “Powered by Shopify” label in the footer. Now, this doesn’t really impact sales, but it’s not exactly ‘on brand’ for many businesses.

Why does Shopify put this footer on all pages by default?

Simply, Shopify uses this little bit of text as free advertising and marketing to further develop their digital footprint. Afterall, it’s their platform you’re using - and they want everyone to know it.

But not everyone wants to offer that advertising - although it’s not huge, it can potentially be viewed as hindering businesses from fully developing their own image and brand. So how can you change this?

Well, it's actually quite easy. With just a few simple steps, you will be able to fully customise YOUR footer to show what you want it to. Whether you want to make sure the footer aligns for brand consistency – or you simply don’t want to offer that free advertising, don’t worry, we’ve got you.

Changing your footer in Shopify

First things first, you’ll need to log into your Shopify store (that’s kind of obvious to be fair).

From there, you need to go to the Admin Panel and select Online Store and Themes. Then, once you’ve selected the theme you want to edit, click Actions in the top right corner of your website. After that, click on the Edit Languages option.

(Don't worry, you’re already halfway through! And no, it doesn’t get harder from here – it really is this easy).

Once you’re in the Edit Language section, use the Search Translation box to locate the text you want to amend or completely remove.

As you want to remove the “Powered by Shopify” part of your footer, you need to type in “Powered” to show all the pages on your website where the footer contains Shopify's self-promotion.

From here, you will be able to see a box stating “Powered by Shopify”, so now you need to delete the text. You can do this normally with our faithful old friend, the backspace button – or you can even do this by dragging your cursor to the box and pressing the spacebar on your keyboard to get rid.

BUT. Before you jump on in and delete the text all together, you might want to consider modifying and writing your own message. This could be something about your brand, image or even about a specific product. It’s completely up to you! Whatever you choose, it will help you show customers a little bit about your vibe, so make sure it’s something you’re happy with.

After customising or editing your website, REMEMBER to click the Save button – which is found at the top right of the page.

That’s it! You will no longer find the “Powered by Shopify” text – and you should even see your own message across the site (if you chose to write your own). Finally, it’s always worth double-checking everything shows as it should – so your last step is to press Online Store and have a little scroll around to make sure your website is looking exactly how you want it to.

Easy-peasy! Sit back and enjoy your lemon flavoured beverage, right!
